20 Girls
2015
Can femininity, vulnerability and innocence live side by side with strength, courage and wisdom? The exquisite contradictions in life that must co-exist in order to reach a persons full potential. This series features classical style portraits of 20 girls aged around 4 to 8 who I came to know during my time in Hong Kong, including my own daughters. This magic age for girls is a time of great freedom, encompassing a distinct lack of self consciousness that will be knocking at the door during adolescence. Using the face as a vehicle for protest, in stark contrast to the beauty and innocence of their youth, the images feature distinctive war paint applied with a commercial make up product. Inviting viewers to question what being a girl means, global challenges for women & how we may be framing our girls into gender stereotypes.
